Tehran Type Week 2025 × GRANSHAN: Advancing Dialogue in Persian and Arabic Type

On 27 November 2025, the third edition of Tehran Type Week took place at Kooshk Bagh-e Honar in Tehran, marking a new chapter in the event’s development and in its collaboration with GRANSHAN. For the first time, Tehran Type Week was presented with an international approach, creating a shared platform for exchange between Persian and Arabic type designers, researchers, and educators from Iran and beyond.

With more than 300 participants, the event reaffirmed its role not as a one-off exhibition, but as a long-term, research-oriented cultural initiative one that understands typography as a living practice shaped by reading habits, language, and cultural memory.

Founded and directed by Atefeh Mohammadi and Majid Shahbodaghi, Tehran Type Week continues to build bridges between disciplines that often operate in isolation, including type design, calligraphy, publishing, education, and visual research. This integrated approach aims to narrow the gap between theory, design practice, and real-world application across both print and digital environments.

The 2025 program combined specialized lectures, open discussions, and hands-on workshops, addressing topics such as digitally underrepresented languages, contemporary type processes, publishing realities, and emerging technologies. The open panel “Gap Type” offered a rare opportunity for designers, researchers, educators, and users to openly discuss shared challenges within the type ecosystem.

GRANSHAN’s Contribution

As part of this edition, GRANSHAN partnered with Tehran Type Week in shaping the International Exhibition, presenting 20 Persian and Arabic type projects from the GRANSHAN archive. Placed alongside Iranian and international works, the exhibition encouraged close comparison between scripts that share calligraphic roots while revealing how cultural context, audience expectations, and design choices lead to distinct typographic expressions.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment by GRANSHAN and Tehran Type Week to cross-script dialogue, knowledge exchange, and the continued visibility of writing systems beyond Latin within global design discourse.

The exhibition continues at the Isfahan Museum of Contemporary Art, and the newly published Tehran Type Week book documents the research, discussions, and works presented, ensuring that the insights generated extend beyond the event itself.
