A new global partnership connects awards, exhibitions, training and emerging talent to widen the future of type design beyond Latin.
Today we are proud to announce a new international partnership with Stanford SILICON, the Stanford Initiative on Language Inclusion and Conservation in Old and New Media.
Our two organisations arrive to the same question from different directions. GRANSHAN is a leading international platform dedicated to scripts beyond Latin. Through our awards, conferences, exhibitions and research, we have built a global community around multiscript type design. SILICON works to make the digital world linguistically inclusive by supporting designers, researchers, educators and language communities. Together, we want to make sure that recognition leads to real opportunity.
From recognition to opportunity
Designers who emerge through the Bloom and BASE Awards will gain new routes into SILICON's programmes, including the Dr Chan Yeh Practitioner Program and the Donald Knuth & Charles Bigelow Type Design Incubator (KBI).
From 2027, GRANSHAN and Stanford SILICON will also run an annual co-branded KBI cohort. It will bring emerging designers together for intensive training focused on writing systems and language communities where more type design capacity can make a real difference.
A new international circuit for great work
GRANSHAN award recipients will have opportunities to present their work through Stanford SILICON programming, including its flagship Face/Interface conference. In turn, outstanding designers from SILICON programmes will be able to exhibit through GRANSHAN's international events and travelling exhibitions.
We will also explore joint conferences, symposia, research, mentorship, competitions, exhibitions and public programmes devoted to multiscript typography and digital inclusion.
Why this matters
Making a writing system technically available is only the beginning. A language community also needs designers, typefaces, living visual traditions and room to experiment. By connecting GRANSHAN's platform for excellence in type design beyond Latin with SILICON's work in funding, training, incubation and promotion, we hope to help that ecosystem grow worldwide.
We look forward to sharing more as the partnership unfolds, starting with the first co-branded KBI cohort in 2027.
