PhD Catherine Dixon

Designer, teacher, writer

Catherine Dixon is a designer, writer and teacher, with a particular interest in the history of lettering and typographic education. Her doctoral thesis focused on the problems of describing typefaces and she continues to write about type and letterform, especially in an environmental context having co-authored with Phil Baines the book Signs: lettering in the environment. In 2023 she co-curated the exhibition Extol which highlighted the creative impact of an understanding of lettering history in the design practice of Baines. She teaches on the Graphic Communication Design programme at Central Saint Martins, part of the University of the Arts London (UAL) where she also supervises ongoing typographic research.
