What are the challenges and opportunities in designing multiscript fonts? How do you see multi script typography develop and used now and in the next decade?

Designing a typeface that does not originate from one’s own cultural or linguistic context is inherently a challenging endeavour. There is a risk of unintentionally copying existing typefaces, sticking too much to tradition, not being bold enough to explore new possibilities, or letting the Latin script overly influence the design in form and concept – especially when the starting point is a Latin typeface.

Collaboration with type experts, both as designers and consultants, is crucial for achieving a successful outcome. Ideally, projects involving multiple scripts would start with the development of all scripts from scratch. However, in our experience, this is rarely the case. Typically, the Latin script already exists, and the challenge then lies in respecting the typographic rules and traditions of each script while translating the intent and concept of the Latin typeface into the other scripts without imposing upon them.

Creating high-quality multiscript typefaces that are sensitive to different cultures is an important way to push type design forward and inspire new discoveries. These typefaces help increase diversity in expression and accessibility, while also supporting the preservation of languages and knowledge.

In today’s increasingly connected and globalised world, where companies expand into international markets, information flows faster than ever, and people move across borders, the need for high-quality multiscript typefaces is growing. These typefaces are not just tools; they are bridges between cultures, helping to improve communication and celebrate diversity.

TypeTogether: Care for Characters

From TypeTogether’s beginning in 2006, co-founders Veronika Burian and José Scaglione committed to one primary goal: sharing their love of typography by creating modern multiscript fonts for the world through deep research and expert collaboration. They built a talented and diverse core team by purposefully hiring from different countries and backgrounds, rounding it out with a network of other specialists who intermittently cooperate on specific projects.

TypeTogether’s typefaces are specifically designed for enjoyable long-form reading, legibility, and as custom fonts for corporations and branding. Honoured for its high quality, usefulness, personality, and ability to grab attention, their font library already covers 14 scripts, hundreds of languages, and is diligently expanding each year.

In addition to bringing quality typefaces to market, TypeTogether also does their part to improve the health of the design industry and produce positive impact through written communication. In numerous ways they steadily contribute to literacy and design education, support minority languages, and champion fairness in the typography business. From the very start they have cared about personal relationships, quality work, and about our sphere of impact in this world. TypeTogether’s holistic process — from insightful design and enviable hires, to relational business practices — has turned their small, independent font company with a vision for responsibility and cultural respect into one of the most influential type foundries today.
