Byung-in Kang

Calligrapher / Calligraphy Director / Graphic Designer

Kang Byung-in is a calligrapher and the CEO of the Handwriting Research Institute. He graduated from the Department of Advertising Design at the Hongik University Graduate School of Industrial Art. He has been a Director of the National Hangeul Museum Support Association since 2013, and a member of the Kyobo Book Center Handwriting Culture Promotion Committee and Director of the World Letter Research Institute since 2017. In 2026 he became a Non-executive Board Member of the National Museum of World Writing Systems. From 2011 to 2020 he served as an Honorary Teacher of Culture and Arts for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and from 2013 to 2014 he taught at the Paju Typography Institute (PaTI).

His calligraphy combines calligraphy and design – a fusion and modern reinterpretation of tradition – and promotes the diversity and beauty of Hangeul letterforms. Taking the principle behind the creation of Hangeul as his artistic philosophy, he presents works that capture life and sound in harmony with nature. Through his calligraphy, he makes the principles of Hangeul’s character formation easier to understand and shows the three-dimensionality and artistry of Hangeul through his own interpretation of the semantic imagery of its letterforms. He expands the scope of Hangeul lettering by showing that Hangeul is a highly original and scientific script that carries not only phonetic qualities but also meaning, like an ideogram, as well as artistic value. In recognition of his efforts to expand the design and artistic value of Hangeul, he was awarded the Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit at the 2012 Korea Design Awards. Today, Kang Byung-in runs the Calligraphy Research Center and works on the development of Hangeul design and on fostering younger generations.

Recently, he held his largest solo exhibitions at the Korean Cultural Centers in Russia, Spain and Sydney, and is expanding his activities to other countries.
