Give Voice to Type
The 11th GRANSHAN Type Design Competition
We are very happy about the large number of submissions at this year's GRANSHAN Type Design Competition. Many submissions are at a very high level – this affirms us in our work in promoting outstanding non-Latin typefaces to strengthen cultural diversity and identity.
The more than 50-member jury evaluated all submissions (= the longlist) in three rounds. First, each member voted online using a points system. Then the submissions with a defined minimum score of the first level (= the shortlist) were discussed in video conferences with the members of the Script Group and their Script Chair. Lastly at the final jury session of the Script Chairs together with both Chairmen it was then determined which typefaces should be awarded the 1st, 2nd or 3rd prize in each Category/Script Group, and which should receive a Special Mention. As the very last and most distinguished task it was decided together, if and if so, which 1st prize should be selected as Grand Prize. For organizational reasons, the final jury session was not scheduled to be held in Tokyo as a face-to-face meeting, but a bit later than planned as a video conference.
Please follow this link, which brings you to the results page. Here you will find an overview of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes (and of course the Grand Prize) with the submitted posters. In the lower part you will find all awards, including the Special Mentions and also the annotations of the jury, in case there were comments or restrictions concerning the submissions. In addition, all PDFs of the original submissions of the winning works are documented in the lower part, and, as far as they are available, photos and short bios of the type designer.
In future the GRANSHAN Type Design Competition will take place every second year, the next time in 2021. In the meantime, next year we will start with a new competition dedicated to fonts in use: the GRANSHAN non-Latin Typography Competition will in future be held alternately with the Type Design Competition. Start is expected in July 2020.
A big thank you to all submitters! As well as to the jury members and the supporters and partners who volunteer for this unique project worldwide promoting non-Latin scripts!

International font competitions – of which there are few – usually focus on Latin script. But small type foundries, global corporations and leading universities have all uncovered a secret: promoting non-Latin typefaces opens up enormous economic potential and fantastic design opportunities.
The GRANSHAN non-Latin type competition recognises the most notable typefaces for individual non-Latin scripts as well as multiscript families.
The number of multilingual typeface developments has grown continuously in recent years – and there are more and more non-Latin typefaces designed on the basis of Latin typefaces. Therefore, GRANSHAN now offers submissions in nine SCRIPT GROUPS in three CATEGORIES.

The 11th GRANSHAN Competition Jury once again consists of numerous internationally acclaimed experts: for each SCRIPT GROUP a minimum of three dedicated specialists will provide reviews of the submission. Each SCRIPT GROUP is moderated by a so-called script chair (see left), who is also casting a vote and whose vote acts as a tie-breaker.
To ensure continuity in the evaluation over the years, the script chairs are designated for several years. The script specialists are chosen collectively by the script chairs together with the chairmen.
The President and the Vice President of the GRANSHAN Foundation, Boris Kochan and Edik Ghabuzyan, are responsible for the appointment of the script chairs and for moderating the competition as non-voting chairmen.
In each of the nine SCRIPT GROUPS (Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, etc.), for each of the CATEGORIES A, B and C a first, second and third prize can be awarded as well as special mentions. With the special mentions, the jury will honor projects where single aspects or a very advanced stage of development have convinced the jury, while their overall impression remains behind the award-winning works of this or previous years.
One GRANSHAN GRAND PRIZE of € 1,000 will be awarded by the jury at the end of the judging process to the best of the best.
